A 41-year old Ohio mother has been charged with theft through deception for allegedly lying about her 7-yearold daughter having leukemia.

According to Noble County Sheriff’s Office Pamela Reed “publicly depicted” the health status of her 7-year old daughter, even shaving the head.

According to the police affidavit, the mother stated that she liked the “support” provided as a result the fake cancer scheme.

Authorities say that the mother, 41, paraded a fake cancer diagnosis of her daughter to local organizations for years. These groups had raised money and made financial contributions to offset the family’s medical costs.

Pamela Reed (41 years old) of Pleasant City, Ohio was arrested by Sheriff Mackie and detectives on January 8, 2024. They transported her to Noble County Jail. (Noble County Sheriffs Office).

Sheriff Jason Mackie stated that a local organization gave $8,000 to a family.

Reed wrote regular updates on her daughter’s cancer treatment in a page called “Our Rae of Sunshine -Team Addey Rae”.

The page announced a “hog-roast benefit for Addey reed” in Oct. 2023 to raise funds for treatment for the girl.

Many people wrote that they prayed for the health of Reed’s daughter on this page. It has more than 1,000 likes.

Reed’s elaborate façade ended on January 8th when she was arrested after an investigation conducted by local police , Noble County Children’s Services and local police .



OHIO WOMAN CLEARED OF CHARGES FOR HER HANDLING OF HOME MISCARRIAGE

The sheriff’s department said that authorities received an anonymous tip four days before Reed was arrested about her mother’s plan.

The affidavit states that Shenandoah elementary school alerted the authorities about Reed’s lies when they called the daughter’s doctor, who confirmed the child had not been treated or diagnosed with cancer or leukemia.

Reed told the school her daughter, who was blind in her right-eye as well, would be requiring surgery shortly.

The elementary school expressed concern after the 7-year old had missed 280 school hours this year.

Police said that after an investigation they also confirmed Reed’s daughter ‘did not have cancer.

The mother confessed to police that, during Reed’s police interview, she “exaggerated or fabricated medical conditions” in order to receive donations from local groups.

The affidavit stated that Reed admitted to the authorities that she had shaved the head of her daughter to maintain the façade of her daughter’s false diagnosis.

Reed acknowledged that she also obtained seizure medications because of the information she provided to doctors. Reed admitted that her daughter was unlikely to need the medication.

Reed was charged for theft through deception. This is a fourth-degree felony. Noble County Court judge Jennifer Arnold set the bond for Reed at $50,000.

In a statement issued jointly by Sheriff Mackie and Misty Wells of the Department of Job and Family Services (JFS), the two said that “child abuse and neglect isn’t always clear-cut.”
