Rangers reported that a 41-year old ice fishing man died when he plunged through a frozen New York pond with his younger brother.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation released a press statement stating that a dog walker saw two brothers fall through the thin ice of Basswood Pond, in Otsego County New York, and immediately called 911.

Forest ranger Nate Laymon, who was hiking on a trail only a minute from the pond, received the news that his brother had fallen into .

In a video that was posted on social media by the department, Laymon stated that he found his older brother who was searching for his younger sibling and treading water.

Forest ranger Nate Laymon from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation searched for the two brothers in the frozen pond.

The ranger stated that he carefully slid out onto the paper-thin ice, which was about 1 inch in thickness.

When he reached the older brother, he used both a rope and a throw bag to pull the man from the water.

Laymon explained that Laymon had coached Laymon to kick his feet.

The accident occurred while the brothers were ice-fishing on a New York pond. NYS Department of Environmental Conservation stated that the ice had only been 1 inch thick when the brothers fell into the subzero waters.

Laymon used a sled and dragged the man who was suffering from hypothermia to the shore.

After saving the first brother Laymon then turned his attention towards searching for the other brother who was still missing in the frozen pond.

I just started scanning the waters. “I just started scanning the water.” Laymon said.

Laymon said, “I saw Polaris words because he wore a snowmobile jacket.”

Laymon found his younger brother in 7 to 8 feet of water at 3:05 pm.

Laymon explained, “I grabbed the man and got him to the surface.” “Just getting him over the ice shelf and out was a huge problem.” By that time, I was tired.

Laymon was assisted by other rescuers to help pull the man from the water onto the shore.

The EMT began CPR immediately on the man, and ultimately transported both brothers to a local hospital.

The younger brother died later in the night, after the older one had been treated and released.

Laymond said everyone involved did “a fantastic job,” and that he is proud they gave the brother the “fighting chance” of surviving the incident.

Laymond stated that “everyone who was involved in that rescue did an amazing job.” “We did our best, and saved one and gave the other a fighting shot.”
