According to his family, a high school principal from Iowa who was critically injured in a shooting at a school earlier this month while protecting students has passed away.

Perry High School Dan Marburger, principal of the school, died on Sunday. His family announced this via a GoFundMe account. Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory has confirmed the death with The Associated Press.

The GoFundMe site said: “Although news of the tragedy hasn’t yet fully sunk in, Dan Marburger made the ultimate sacrifice.” After 10 days he lost the battle and tragically, his death.

The shooting occurred in the cafeteria of Perry High School shortly after 7:30 am on January 4, the first day that students returned from their winter break.

Six other people were also injured in the shooting. The shooter was a 17-year old student who died from an apparent gunshot he self-inflicted.

Marburger, according to the Department of Public Safety of the state the day following the shootings, “acted in a selfless manner and put himself in danger in an effort to protect his pupils.”

Elizabeth Marburger posted on the family’s GoFundMe page that her husband had died at around 8 am Sunday morning.

She wrote: “He fought and gave us 10 glorious days that we’ll cherish forever.”

Perry has a population of approximately 8,000. The high school is a part of the 1,785 student Perry Community School district.
