Dr. Sherita H. Gold, chief diversity officer of Johns Hopkins Medicine, does not seem to be facing any discipline for her definitions of “privilege”, which were published in the school newsletter. This is despite the intense backlash, which forced the institution’s leadership to “repudiate”.

A spokesperson for the school responded to a question from Fox News Digital on Sunday about whether Golden would be disciplined. The statement said that Golden “sincerely” acknowledged the mistake in an email.

A Johns Hopkins Medicine spokesperson said that the January edition of their monthly newsletter, Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity, used language which contradicted the values of Johns Hopkins Medicine as an institution. Dr. Sherita Gold, Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Chief Diversity Officer has apologized for the error and the language in the message.

The original newsletter claimed “males,” “Whites,”, “middle aged people,” and “able-bodied persons” among other groups benefitted from “privilege,” as the “Diversity word of the month” for the issue of the Monthly Diversity Digest in January 2024.

“Privilege” is an unearned advantage given to members of a certain social group. The newsletter stated that privilege operates at personal, interpersonal and cultural levels and provides benefits and favors to dominant group members.

Golden apologized on Thursday and said that she “deeply regretted” the “overly simple and poorly phrased” newsletter. She said it “had the opposite of the effect, being exclusionary, and hurtful” to members of the community.

In a letter sent to the community, leaders at the institution stated that they supported Golden’s apology as well as her decision to withdraw the definition. They also added that they “reject this language.”
