According to a local New York Police Commissioner, the growing frustration with the increase in petty crime has led good Samaritans to interfere with police efforts.

A good Samaritan from Yonkers, New York helped a “porch-pirate” running away from the law this week.

Video released by the authorities shows that Francisco Jose Eder Mateo (27), of the Bronx, New York City, was knocked down by a city employee who got out of his car as the suspected thief tried to run past him.

The good Samaritan who helped Eder Mateo to be pinned down was quickly arrested by a Yonkers Police officer.

Francisco Jose Eder Mateo, a Yonkers Police officer, was arrested for allegedly stealing packages off a porch.

A New York Post article states that the pursuit started around 2:30 pm on Jan. 3, when Eder Mateo allegedly was caught on Ring video doorbell stealing two packages in front a door.

The homeowner wasn’t home, but he saw the video on his phone and contacted police.

The homeowner stated, “I just watched someone on my Ring camera steal 2 packages,” according to audio released by the department.

Yonkers Police released bodycam footage of an officer telling Eder Mateo, a sleuth, to stop walking on a residential street before he fled.

In an interview with Fox News Digital Commissioner Christopher Sapienza of the Yonkers Police Department said that there is a “palpable” frustration among citizens over the recent increase in property crimes. This has led some citizens to interfere with police activities.

Sapienza said that property crimes are causing a lot of frustration, including shoplifting, larcenies and stolen vehicles.

Sapienza acknowledges that he is grateful for the help of good Samaritans. “At the same, we do not want to place civilians in an unsafe situation.”

He said, “We are trained and equipped to deal with these situations.”

Sapienza stated that Yonkers still struggles with “post COVID lawlessness”, and recently passed state legislation which makes it harder to reduce crime.

We don’t accept small crimes in Yonkers. Every crime is important to us. He said, “We’ve seen small crimes become bigger crimes.”

Sapienza says that new measures such as bail reforms and raising the criminal liability age “make it more difficult to do our jobs and keep people behind bars.”
