New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Tuesday she plans to spend $2.4billion to help care for the large influx of migrants that has overwhelmed New York City’s homeless shelters. This is a major political issue for Democrats.

The governor’s $233 billion budget proposal includes a migrant spending program that would provide shelter services, legal aid and more. This will be the start of months of negotiations between legislative leaders and the governor.

A question loomed over the legislative session about how the governor would deal migrants . Approximately 70,000 migrants are currently in New York City’s care.

Hochul has been promising financial aid to the city for asylum seekers, despite his disagreements with New York City mayor Eric Adams’ administration. The state has already set aside $1.9 billion for emergency funds

Adams spent the last week recalibrating the budget projections he made, and reversing some of the cuts he planned to make. This was after his office revised its estimates on the cost of the migrant crisis for the city.

Hochul’s plan allocates $2.4 billion for migrants to pay for short-term housing services, health care, and larger scale emergency housing centers. These were set up in response to the influx asylum seekers.

According to her proposal, the money would be used to provide legal assistance for migrants going through the process of obtaining a work permit and asylum.
