According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the number of homeless people in California and New York increased last year. Fox News Digital reports that the crisis requires radical new solutions.

“Let 2024 bring new solutions, new thinking and new paradigm shifts. I think it’s possible,” said Jim Killoran. He is the CEO of The Fuller Center for Housing of Greater New York City. This faith-based nonprofit works to provide housing to those who are in need.

Killoran spoke with Fox News Digital regarding the increase in homelessness in New York. He said that the problem will only get worse for the Empire State, as immigrants flood across the U.S.-Mexico border and move to the northern states.

HUD’s annual data shows that New York has the second largest homeless population in the country as of 2023. There are 103,200 individuals who are homeless.

The Point-In-Time Count Report, a study that records the number individuals who were living in shelters or on the street on a single January night 2023, is called the Point-In-Time Count Study. The data provided by the federal government is only a snapshot, and often incomplete. It’s hard to find each homeless person in a particular city or state.

The federal government’s data shows that California, with 181,399 homeless people, is the state with the highest number of homeless people in the United States.

New Hampshire and New Mexico were the states that saw the greatest percentage increase in homelessness from 2022 to 2023. They recorded 52% and 50 % increases respectively. The data shows that New York and Colorado are tied for third place when it comes to the percentage increase in homeless populations.

According to the study, the data collected in New York City includes migrants that flooded the city in the past and continue to make their way into the Big Apple. They account for “more than 30% of increase in sheltered homeless in New York City.”

Killoran stated that homelessness has been a problem in New York for many years, but it is now exacerbated by the open border policies which have resulted in an influx migrants who have often no place to stay when they arrive in city.

FOR THE FIRST TIME, MORE NYC MIGRANTS ARE IN CITY SHELTERS THAN HOMELESS: “TIPPING POINT”

“Nobody should go to sleep at night without having a decent home.” It’s just common sense. We’ve accepted the homeless. “Now, we accept everyone who comes over without a home, which is absolutely absurd,” he said.

According to city data more than 157.600 migrants have entered New York City since spring last year. Many of them were bussed in from border states to the Empire State. According to a city rule dating back decades, the city is required to provide housing to anyone who asks for it. This week, Mayor Eric Adams said that the rule should not be applied to the migrant crises. He has said previously that the immigration crisis will “destroy New York City.”

Killoran said that the high cost of housing and the construction of luxury high-rises in the city, as well as the surrounding areas, were all factors in driving homelessness.

Killoran wants to see a change, and he’s asking everyone, from residents to politicians, to come up with ideas to help solve the homelessness problem in the state. He said that New York City built COVID compliant restaurants “overnight”, during the pandemic. The same idea and initiative could be used to build housing for homeless people.

SAN FRANCISCO Democrat SAYS HOMELESSNESS IS ‘ABSOLUTELY A RESULT OF CAPITALISM”

He said that building small houseboats and tiny homes, converting commercial buildings to housing, re-building single-room occupancy houses, using empty shipping container housing for housing, or even creating “new town” could reduce the number of homeless people on the street.

Killoran said that Ivy League colleges could use a small percentage of their multi-billion dollar endowments, which they have amassed over the years to build houses.

Homeless Crisis Continues to Spread Across US as NYC and LA Expected to be Hardest Hit

He said that “the number one thing to do is to stop the immigration,” noting that America was made up of immigrants, and that he hoped that every person would be able to live the best possible life that America has to offer. However, the system is already stretched by the homeless Americans.

He also said that there are more senior citizens on the streets, especially in New Rochelle in Westchester County, just outside New York City.

The housing crisis is escalating in this region. “I go to the gas station for coffee and a homeless man is sleeping in front of the door,” he said. “More people are being burdened with high utility, food and rent prices, creating a perfect storm.”

According to HUD data, in 2023 20 out of every 10 000 people will be homeless, which is approximately 653,100 people. The data shows that homelessness in the U.S. increased by 12% last year. It also found “the largest number of people who reported being homeless on a single evening since reporting began.”

Killoran stated that 2024 is the year to implement policies and plans to curb increases in migration and homelessness.
