Fox News reports that Sean Patrick Maloney, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair, has given in to Mike Lawler, the GOP nominee for New York’s 17th congressional District. This is a significant win for Republicans.
Fox News reports that Lawler is a member of the New York State Assembly. He also works as a partner at Checkmate Strategies which provides communications and campaign consulting services.

The two candidates argued about issues such as the economy and abortion during an Oct. 12 debate. Lawler attacked Maloney’s Inflation Relief Act and promised to vote to reduce government spending. Maloney increased his support for the bill by citing its Medicare and prescription drug price caps.
Lawler voiced his opposition to the national abortion ban. He stated that while he supports life, he believes exceptions should be made for incest, murder, and the life of the mother.
Maloney is, however, strongly pro-choice. He was a cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2022. This bill sought to codify and expand the right to abortion that is protected by the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade precedent.
As Maloney’s lead over Lawler grew in the month before the midterm elections, the DCCC provided approximately $600,000.
